Nautilus maintains a wide range of vessels and technological resources, which permit it to autonomously undertake oceanographic survey, geophysics and environmental assessments.
Since 1993, it has been the owner of the ship “Coopernaut-Franca”, built at the Rossato shipyards at Marghera, and purposely constructed and equipped for oceanographic mapping within the Mediterranean Sea: it has been deliberately equipped with laboratory spaces, living quarters for the crew and scientific research personnel, as well as navigational instruments and service spaces.
Other seagoing vessels, used in both coastal and off-shore operations, are the ship “The President” and other inflatable vessels.
The company also runs two boats for servicing the fish farm plantation: one in fibreglass, complete with a cabin, 16.50m long and a further boat, 6.50m in length, also in fibreglass.
Nautilus is also equipped with the following instruments: echo-sonar, sub bottom profiler, side scan sonar systems, magnetometers, multi-parameter probes, topographical survey instruments (infrared and laser), satellite-linked topographic systems, GPS, DGPS and underwater cable-guided vehicles (ROV).
These form a considerable array of technological resources that allow a range of activities to be undertaken in the field.
Completing this collection are instrumentation for assessing waterworks and sewer leakages, river discharge gauges, instruments for recording and sampling in-situ, weather stations, and instrumentation for measuring currents, waves and tides.
The field activity is integrated and supported by the services provided by the analysis laboratory (chemical identification, chemical-physical, microbiology and benthos ecology), the data processing centre (CED) and the cartography service.
All of these are fully equipped with the latest hardware and software applications specialised for the analysis, acquisition and processing of data and for the creation of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
The Geology and Marine Geophysics Unit has the following instrumentation at its disposal:
