Through the wealth of experience Nautilus has gained in its exploration of the marine environment, in particular through geophysical survey, the company is today amongst the most competitive at an international level in research focused towards the identification and documentation of underwater archaeological sites.
Underwater archaeology at Nautilus initially began as an aspect of the work of the geophysics unit, but has grown to become one of the most important and prestigious aspects of the company’s work.
Nautilus has conducted a number of major projects within the field of archaeology:
Archeomar Project – The aim of the project is the creation a national register of the underwater archaeology of the southern Italian regions of Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Puglia (www.archeomar.it).
The project, undertaken on the behalf of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, is conducted in close collaboration with the 6 archaeological regional authorities responsible for the territory.
The work has involved the documentation of the sites through the accurate recording of their location as well as the creation of a photographic and video archive.
The sites recorded by the project total over 287, and have since been classified and catalogued within a specially created spatial GIS database.
Over 100 of these sites were unknown to the archaeological authorities.
Below is a selection of some of the spectacular images recorded by the survey.
